“…when I found that I knew not only that there was God but that I was a child of God, when I understood that, when I comprehended that, more than that, when I internalized that, ingested that, I became courageous.”—Maya Angelou
The email conversation sometimes starts like this: “I would really like to get a sexy portrait of myself but I don’t look as perfect as the women I see on your website…”
Let me start by telling you a few stories but before that let me remind you that the women you see on this blog are not perfect either. What I try to do in their portrait is to accentuate their best features but always—always—my goal is to make you look as beautiful as possible. On to the stories…
The first client who expressed misgivings about her appearance had a hobby: She was a rodeo barrel racer and as part of her training and competition, she had fallen off her horse, many, many times. This created lots of scars on her legs and arms but she was truly a beautiful person inside and outside. Through posing, makeup and retouching we managed to hide and minimize her scars so she was happy with the final portrait.
Another, mature client had a number of scars from various surgeries over the years and came to us after she talked with another photographer who declined to work with her because of her scarring. I can’t imagine being that insensitive to any person let alone this particular woman. We met and she showed me some nude selfies to show me her scars. I told her “no problem” and we ended up creating a Little Black Book that she gave to her boyfriend who later became her husband. I don’t think my photographs had anything to do with that other than giving her some confidence.
And when a young client approached us, telling me she wanted an intimate portrait but she was concerned because she had a number of scars. I told her about my experience with the rodeo rider and we scheduled a photo shoot. During the photo session I casually asked if she was an equestrian too and if the scars were from falling of a horse and she said “no.” She never told me where the scars came from and we never asked beyond that initial question—it was none of my business. My job was to make her look beautiful and I think I did and she agreed with me, as did her husband.
I am not showing photographs any of these women in today’s post but there are several images of each of them scattered throughout his blog. I’ll never tell who they are because I don’t think it’s appropriate. Because we want all of the women we photograph to “look perfect” and beautiful—starting with you.
