Several years ago when we were writing a book about boudoir photography, we included an image of a nude pregnant woman who was holding a teddy bear placed in such a way to create a mostly implied nude. The editor, who was a woman, totally freaked out and refused to run the portrait in the book. She never could give me a good reason why she wanted to remove the photograph—there were plenty of other nudes, implied and otherwise on its pages—but I’m guessing she felt squeamish about it.
Some clients feel that way too and while interested in an intimate portrait would prefer not to focus on their pregnancy but more on creating a sexy portrait of a woman who just happens to be pregnant.
We photographed this and other subjects several times during their pregnancies, partially, at their request, to document their physical changes but also to try different approaches to see the many ways that intimate portraiture is flexible and is not just pose 1, pose 2 and big hats and hairdos. It is, as its name clearly states, intimate and portraiture and is also infinitely flexible in the way that only truly creative images can be produced. This is just one of them…
