Everything I have ever written has been in the same chair, in the same room.—Alan Garner

They may not be the actual subject of an intimate portrait but props and backgrounds can not only enhance but can actually improve the overall look of your intimate portrait. At my home-based studio, I don’t have lots of props—hardly any in fact.

But one that has been used in different ways by different models over the years is a red cloth covered and comfy Queen Anne Chair that has always had a place in our office.

How I Made this Photograph: I photographed Kellie in the “red chair” using mostly window light that was coming from camera left. Some fill was provided by a Canon550EX speedlite with a Sto-fen Omni-Bounce diffuser fitted to soften the light.

The camera used was a Canon EOS 50D and the inexpensive EF 22-55mm f/4-5.6 USM lens. Exposure was 1/160 sec at f/5.6 and ISO 1600. (Not a typo.)

If, on the other hand, if the subject has something of their own, something personal—an object, memento or even an item of jewelry—that you think will add to the specialness to portrait, by all mean have them bring it along but with them as the star

Models, potential models and women looking to find our what this kind of experience is like should dontact us today via the Contact tab above and let’s schedule a photo shoot.
