Not long ago, there was an on-line discussion among portrait and glamour photographers asking what inspires them to create new, exciting images.
It’s New Things!
For me, it’s new things. It can be a new camera, new lens or just a new place to make images. When driving around I make notes about locations that look like they would be a fun place to make photographs. Even better are those locations that will serve as a location for an intimate portrait session.
I’m always searching for interesting locations for making intimate portraits for our clients. The ideal location is somewhat that’s private so it doesn’t attract too much attention from gawkers and the subject can relax away from prying eyes of the public. The right location could be as simple as a client’s back yard, even their front yard if there’s enough trees and foliage, like a shoot I did in Northern Colorado a few years ago. This kind of privacy means that you can relax and a relaxed client always produces the best photographs.
The other thing that’s not always needed but is a bonus is some place with an interesting look or background, like the featured portrait, that was shot near Phoenix AZ on private property and produced a wholesome, yet sexy outdoorsy effect for this particular client.
How I Made this Shot: The original portrait was shot with a Canon EOS 50D and EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM lens (at 58mm.) Canon discontinued this useful lens but you can usually pick up used copies on Amazon or eBay for reasonable prices. Exposure was 1/80 sec at f/4.5 and ISO 200 with an EX550 speedlite used as fill, although it could have used a little more fill because it’s slightly underexposed. Then, because I am, if nothing borderline OCD, I rotated the original JPEG file two degrees clock-wise to make the composition more appealing
