Today’s Post by Blue Moon Staff:

As a young man I once asked my photography mentor what was the worst thing I could do during a portrait session. I guessed he was going to tell me to avoid making some kind of technical mistake but to my everlasting surprise, her said, “not talking to the people.”

I can’t emphasize how important it is to have communication between a photographer and the person in front of their camera, especially during an intimate portraiture session. Unlike some photographers who have a set routine and put their models in pose one, then pose two…

Here at Blue Moon each portrait session is individually tailored to the client and what they want to achieve.

One way that I do this is with my approach to posing: Initially to show a client how to stand or place her body and hands, I put myself in the pose but let her give me her interpretation, which is always much better than my idea. From camera position, I refine the pose, after explaining to the client that when I say, “look left” or “look up” what I mean is to move her face gradually and slowly in that direction.

How I made this shot: The backdrop used was a black Savage Infinity vinyl backdrop that was hung on my JTL background stands. Lighting for the portrait was my usual combination of Paul C Buff’s Alien Bees and DigiBees. Camera was a Panasonic Lumix GH4 with G Vario 14-45mm f/3.5-5.6 lens at 45mm and an exposure of 1/125 sec and f/8 and ISO 200.

Here at Blue Moon, there is no “my way or the highway” approach to boudoir photography. If there is any one secret it’s that we listen to our clients. That’s because intimate portraiture especially, is essentially a collaborative photography genre. We try to combine the best of our talents with the best of of our client’s creating a synergy that makes the sum greater than its parts. To do that we try to be polite, friendly and fun to work with, which is something we strive for each day here at Blue Moon Boudoir Photography.
